Peru Trip June 2004

In June 2004, Pastor Rick Long took his fifth trip to the Amazon. He led a student team of 23 intoYurimaguas, Peru. The 18 students ranged from 11 years old to 21. The adult leaders were: Dr. Kevin Chapman, Judy Templeton, Pam McQuain and Andrew Hasz.

The purpose of this team was to build a wall around the perimeter of the future sight of Grace’s Bible Institute and Core Center. Unfortunately, the prejudice between the Peruvian Nationals and the Amazonian Indians is still very ugly. This generation of Indians is only the first generation removed from slavery in Peru. The wall is to ensure safety for the Chayahuitas as they stay in our Institute.

This team of 23 was remarkable, working harder and more efficient than anyone could have hoped or imagined. In three days, this team was able to lay over 2300 bricks, raising the walls three days ahead of schedule. Because of the teams remarkable work, they were able to spend some of their time in fellowship with the Indians and sharing the gospel after a soccer game in the Plaza of Yurimaguas.

When it was nearing the time of this teams’ departure, they did something no other team from Grace Church had ever done. They went 230 miles on a river boat (3 story Launcha) to Iquitos. They viewed wildlife including many sightings of the Pink Amazon Porpoise. This two day excursion was life changing. Especially to see sunsets from the roof of the boat overlooking God’s grand creation and the moments of corporate worship and study from God’s word.

The team was also treated to a one day trip to a wildlife refuge. It was such a beautiful and peaceful place. Andrew, John and Rick went on a fishing trip with an Indian guide in a dugout canoe. Others played in the river. Some took long guided walks into the jungle. In this village, the founder had a pet ocelot (wild cat). Though it was tame, it was still intimidating. Many were able to pet it. The day was a great finale to a life changing trip.

We are happy to report that all missionaries returned home safely and in good health. This two week adventure changed the lives in profound ways of every team member. It is our desire at Grace to give every member a chance to experience a short term mission trip like this one.
